English White Orpingtons

The White Orpington was created around 1888 to 1893. There is some confusion as to how these bird were created, with one school of thought stating that they were the offspring from a Buff Orpington mated with a White Cochin. However, William Cooks version states that they are the result of crossing and recrossing White Dorkings and Silver Spangled Hamburgs which would explain the fact that they are one of the better egg layers of all the Orpingtons.

White Orpingtons are bred as much for their looks and temperament as for their egg laying capabilities. A healthy White Orpington hen should lay 140 – 220 eggs per year and achieve a weight of between 7 – 10lbs and a cock bird should achieve a weight of between 10 -12lbs.
